How can it already be December? I feel like I just started these classes and yet, the semester is winding down and we are working on our final projects. I can’t quite wrap my head around that fact. In just 8 weeks, I have learned so much but best of all, I have been able to apply it at work.
On Tuesday nights we took “Professional Communication in the Digital Age.” Our main project in this class was to create a blog and analyze a company of our choice. Each week the professors prompted us on how to focus our blog involving different aspects of the company. Often looking at which communication tools they use, and how effective they are.
For our final project in this class, we are working in groups to create a brand identity and content strategy for the MACOMM program. It’s been fun putting together all the tools and strategies that we have learned in class to possibly help improve the program. I admit that I normally do not like working in groups, but this makes it more of a real world experience and it’s been interesting to combine everyone’s ideas.
On Thursday nights, we are taking Multimedia Production 2. This is a production class (obviously) where we are learning how to incorporate stills and video together to create on coherent piece. I swear, you can see each student improve weekly in my class. Everyone came into the program with different skill levels, but we are all starting to produce quality work. For instance, I had never taken a photography class before so this was a whole new experience for me, but I can tell my shots are getting stronger. My final project, an interview profile, is a piece I am truly proud of and can’t wait to add to my portfolio.
What I’ve enjoyed most about this class is that I am using the skills I have learned at work. Once my boss found out what I was doing, she couldn’t wait to take advantage of it! She asked that I create a recruitment video for a few of the programs we run. While I could have done an okay job on this before I took the class, I know that what I am producing is now ten times better!
You should check out some of the productions that we have done on our YouTube page (www.youtube.com/shumacomm) and follow me on twitter to get daily updates as I earn my degree (@MACOMM_SHU)
As always, if you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll get back to you.
Now it’s off to finish those pesky finals.
